Gary Clayton says a privacy policy should comply with a few simple rules. Here are the rules he used to evaluate these policies:
1. Clear and conspicuous;
2. Reasonably understandable (no legalese);
3. Designed to call attention to the nature and significance of the content;
4. Clear as to what information is being collected;
5. Clear as to what choices consumers have regarding the collection of personal information;
6. Clear as to all transfers of personal information;
7. Clear as to the means consumers have to access information contained about them;
8. Designed to instill consumers with trust that the company will respect their privacy and personal information.
