Shadow IT—the use of unauthorized applications and services—can make tech pros cringe. But what if shadow IT is an opportunity to be embraced rather than a problem to stamp out?

Join Stephen Comstock, VP of Site and IT Infrastructure for CBS Interactive, and Interop Radio host Curt Franklin as they discuss how IT leaders can use shadow IT to their advantage. Comstock says shadow IT creates an opportunity to talk to the business about the problems they’re trying to solve.

Rather than shut down an unauthorized app, Comstock’s approach is to find ways that IT can help make the application more suitable, such as getting teams on a single instance, negotiating prices, and ensuring that confidential data gets protected.

A common complaint from IT is that it doesn’t get a seat at the business table. Comstock says these kinds of conversations are one way to get that seat. “Just call people up and say ‘I see you’re doing this. How is it helping you?’”

“The more you do it, your customers will start to come to you, and shadow IT starts to become collaborative IT,” says Comstock. Would this approach work in your organization? Is Stephen crazy? Register today to take part in a lively and engaging discussion with Stephen, Curt and your peers.
