Worldwide Wi-Fi deployment continued on a tear with unit shipments increasing 7 percent between the first quarter and second quarter this year, according to a report from Infonetics Research that was released Friday.

Cisco Systems and its Cisco-Linksys unit dominated the overall WLAN gear market in revenue finishing ahead of D-Link, in third place, and NETGEAR, in fourth place.

The market research firm said WLAN equipment revenue is accounted for by access points’ 67 percent market share and NICs 16 percent, followed by WLAN infrastructure products’ 17 percent.

“Product innovation continues amongst wireless LAN switches,” said Richard Webb, Infonetics directing analyst, in a statement. “Some vendors proclaim the security or RF capabilities of their product, while others focus on VoIP/QoS support or network management tools, Customers now have a genuine choice of products and architectures, a sign of a maturing segment.”
