Executive Summary
Toromont Industries/InformationWeek Live RFP
ITL Infosys
Infosys envisions a distributed component model to ensure rapid deployment and scalability of Toromont's Web-based customer service system.
Architecture details
The Components of this architecture are the COM components placed in MTS containers. The Components will be distributed across geographical locations and across machines. These can access each other easily. This model provides complete flexibility in placing components where they can be most efficiently executed. Typically, this is closest to the data being accessed or in machines that specialise in handling respective components.
The enterprise is also divided into layers of components. This can help in creating a hierarchy of application logic. These layered components will be dynamic run-time entities rather than software code-level entities.
The advantages of this architecture are that it is tried, tested and proven; it provides flexibility in deploying application components; it favorably addresses issues of performance, stability and interoperability; and it is nimble enough to suit changing business scenarios and stable enough to provide security, scalability and robustness.
Architecture components
- Browsers: Any browsers that supports SSL
- LoadBalancer: CISCO
- The balancer ensures that the application servers are uniformly loaded
- AppServer (3 to 5 physical machines with WindowsNT as the OS)
- IIS with SiteServerCommerce Edition (SSCE)
- The Windows 2000 OS comes bundled with ActiveDirectory Service which can be used for LDAP implementation
- The application servers' use a dedicated SQLSERVER database (which resides on another Windows NT machine)
- MSMQ is used for asynchronous processing
- MTS is used for transaction management
- COM components are embedded in MTS as services, which provide the core functionality for the system. These COM components will 'talk' with the 'wrappers' (around Cobol programs) sitting in the AS400 machines for real-time data access and updation. A SNA server (sitting on an NT m/c) will be used for the communication between MTS components and AS400 wrappers
- The Legacy system comprising of DB2 and BAAN databases accessed by Cobol programs running on AS400 machine will be the data source for the system
