SecureVoice Encrypts Mobile VoIP Communications

CellTrust showcases SecureVoice and SecureSMS, which enable highly secure & confidential voice and text communications, at MWC 2012.
Drunk dialing is one kind of potentially sensitive communication, but when you're talking about communicating medical records or government data, security and encryption take on a whole new level of criticality.

At Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, Spain, information management company CellTrust Corporation introduced its new SecureVoice platform. SecureVoice is built on top of CellTrust's existing secure mobile platform, which powers its SecureSMS service, launched in 2008.

In industries like healthcare, law enforcement, military, and banking, personal records are confidential and access can be a liability. Unauthorized access of this type of data can lead to legal action, loss of business, or worse. Being able to convey this information in an encrypted format can mean it gets shared more quickly and securely.

How does SecureVoice work? Is this a different kind of communication transmission? SecureVoice is a carrier-independent, proprietary implementation using secure voice over IP (VoIP). Since VoIP products can't receive calls if the data connection is turned off, CellTrust uses SMS to wake the data connection and allow the phone to receive a call via VoIP. For a user, SecureVoice means defining who to authorize for your "circle of trust" and who can receive communications. For an administrator, SecureVoice allows remote administration of configuration profiles and notifications of things like unauthorized access attempts. Enterprises can deploy CellTrust SecureVoice as a self-hosted system inside the organization or, alternately, as a managed, hosted solution inside the CellTrust Data Center. While SecureVoice is an enterprise solution, both individuals and enterprises can purchase and use SecureSMS. But as both the sender and receiver need to be CellTrust users, it appears to be a more common solution for enterprises.

SecureSMS works slightly differently. SecureSMS can be pre-loaded on a mobile phone by a manufacturer or sold through a carrier's app store or distribution platform. It provides government-grade encryption of SMS messages and also extends the message size from 160 characters to 5,000 characters. Messages are encrypted and decrypted using symmetric key algorithms in 128-, 192-, or 256-bit keys.

CellTrust services are sold through resellers, carriers, and via CellTrust directly. They are available in over 218 countries with more than 700 carriers. Services are available for Android, Blackberry, Windows Phone, iOS, and Java mobile phones.
