Benioff: Oracle's 'Big Mistake' Is Salesforce's Gain

Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff says hiring former Oracle executive Keith Block moved the company "to the next level" in selling to big companies.

$50 Million?
If you need $50 Million to qualify for a superpod, it is a bit of a niche market.  The reality is that not too many companies would proabably have the requirement for so many licenses for internal use only.  I wonder if we will see cloud providers leveraging superpods and breaking them into instanced environments to share among several customers.  To me, that makes more sense than limiting it to a single company.  Much like VCE and vBlock, having a dedicated server for cloud providers who want to really focus on Salesforce deployments could be an additional source of revenue.

Now I want to see what this beast looks like!

History repeats....
When Mark was fired by HP, Larry hired him as a good friend. Mark did commendable job both at HP and even at Oracle. Block was fired by Oracle, Benioff hired him as a good colleague. Block did commendable job at Oracle. Now with SFDC He will do more with vengeance. When iconic heros or top performing executives are fired, the smart hirer benefits...

Learning at the master's knee
When Benioff remarks about his multi-dimensional relationship with Oracle's Larry Ellison, he's saying he learned much at the master's knee. Ellison years ago made a big deal of hiring Peter Tierney after he had been rejected as CEO by the Relational Technology Inc. board. "We think Peter Tierney was the real leadership at RTI. We never expected to have a chance to hire him," Ellison said at the time. When he hired Hurd, it was after his rejection by the HP board, with the implication that Hurd had been the real leadership of HP. Now Benioff is showing what he's learned during his tenure at Oracle.

HP only known SuperPod customer?
To get a SuperPod, you have to spend $50 million a year with Salesforce and HP, the hardware supplier, is the only known customer? There may be other customers, but so far, SuperPods look like a form of Salesforce endorsement for HP hardware in the cloud. IBM and HP would love to sell more servers to cloud suppliers. Strength in enterprise x86 servers doesn't necessarily carry over to the cloud service providers.

Superpods, Super $$
You have to spend $50 million a year to consider the superpods, huh? No wonder Block is popular with Benioff if these large customers are his specialty. Like Ellison, Benioff knows rainmakers when he sees them.
