This artist's rendering shows the moment when Curiosity touches down on Mars. Note that the rover is suspended from a bridle beneath the spacecraft's descent stage, which uses rockets to control the rate of drop. The rover dangles from three nylon tethers. When touchdown is detected, the bridle will be cut and the descent stage will fly off to clear the landing site.
