Google Analytics is kind of the mother of all monitoring platforms. As far as social network reporting, Google Analytics provides integrated reporting for the Google +1 button "out of the box." To track networks including Facebook and Twitter with Google Analytics, you will need to integrate the Google platform with each network button. Social Engagement reports allow users to see how content is being shared through social interactions such as Likes.

Great list of tools.  I just wrote another article on top social media tools where I went out and asked several social media professionals what tools they could not live without in their day to day media management.

re: 10 Cool Social Media Monitoring Tools
For anyone looking in to purchasing a social media monitoring or 'social listening' platform, just remember what you're getting: the ability to listen to and engage with people who are talking about your brand in the social web. You'll probably get cool charts, nice graphics, and some sort of dashboard showing you whose talking and where. However, remember what you WON'T get:

How these social mentions actually impact your business and how you can learn from the underlying trends to increase business revenue in the long run.

Just remember that the goal of any business is to make money. Any investment you make (including in social media tools) should increase revenue for your business in the long run. Can a social media monitoring tool guarantee a substantial increase in revenue for your company by telling you how cool it is that people are talking about you? No, they can't.

To answer these underlying questions and understand the motivations behind why people say what they say online, you need a combination of the best technology on the market, the right expertise to guide you through the complex trends and patterns, and the right plan to successfully integrate these tools in to your existing business processes.

If you think you're gonna buy one of these tools and money is going to rain down from the sky because you can see whose chattering about your brand online, think again.

re: 10 Cool Social Media Monitoring Tools
For small businesses, the point about "listening" versus "monitoring" is especially crucial. Maximizing the value of a small business owner's social media marketing will require him/her to actively listen to social conversations and then to respond accordingly. Simply monitoring social media will not generate the volume of customer leads and increased customer engagement that a small business is hoping to achieve based on time spent.

I am COO of SpokeSignal (www.spokesignal.com), a web application specifically tailored for small businesses to help listen to and engage with their customers. This distinction between "listening" and "monitoring" is why we set out to build this tool; quite frankly, we did not find many compelling solutions in the market that helped small business owners simplify the two-way conversation with potential, current, and former customers.

We have not opened up the application to the public but are in the process of handing out invites if you know any small business owner that may want to be an early invite to try the platform free of charge.

re: 10 Cool Social Media Monitoring Tools
Here's another cool social media tool that goes WAY beyond monitoring--Meltwater Buzz. Meltwater Buzz provides access to over 200 million sources so brands get a full view of consumer conversation and perception about their brand, their market and even their competitors. But social media monitoring is the just the first step for a business or brand to see value from social media, and Meltwater Buzz goes WAY beyond just monitoring--to direct engagement, social media management and the development of an intelligent social contact database.

Let me know if you'd like to learn more or to see a demo or contact one of our global offices directly!

Most of these solutions want to measure my personal Facebook and LinkedIn accounts, rather than the organization pages that I administer. Any suggestions for measuring just the organizational stuff?

Social is a Business Imperative
Social is a Business Imperative
The use of social media for a host of business purposes is rising. Indeed, social is quickly moving from cutting edge to business basic. Organizations that have so far ignored social - either because they thought it was a passing fad or just didnít have the resources to properly evaluate potential use cases and products - must start giving it serious consideration.
