7 Facebook Wishes For 2014

Facebook botched some changes in 2013, but what will next year bring? Here's our wish list.

Facebook users voice their dislikes as often as that new mom down the street posts baby pics. And in 2013, Facebook gave people plenty of fodder. Proposed privacy changes created user outrage, prompting even the Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether Facebook violated an agreement with federal regulators.

Facebook users also spoke up when the social network announced it would loosen settings for teenagers, allowing them to post publicly. And when Graph Search privacy implications became apparent, users criticized the social network for taking advantage of old user content.

In March, Facebook announced a drastic newsfeed redesign that included separate feeds for photos, news, and more. Nine months later, the social network backtracked: According to reports, it has canned a broader rollout, since the changes just didn't resonate with users.

But Facebook didn't just launch flops in 2013. Earlier this year, it added new ways to keep your account safe, including the new Trusted Friends feature, and it finally enabled secure browsing for all users.

Facebook also added a few innovative features to its portfolio. In January, the social network announced that people could use Facebook's Messenger app to place free calls to Facebook friends. Most recently, Facebook expounded on its mobile features with OpenTable integration, which lets you make dinner reservations on the go through a restaurant's Facebook page. It also improved photo albums by letting you name select friends who can contribute to a shared album.

So what's in store for the social network in 2014? Experts agree that Facebook will continue its push into mobile advertising, which users will undoubtedly resist.

1. Timeline Search
Facebook's Graph Search does an OK job of resurfacing some information. For example, photos of you and Mike, nearby restaurants, and friends who live in San Francisco. But it doesn't help you in situations where a friend asks you to send her that link you shared a couple months ago. You could scroll through your posts month by month, but that's time consuming. Instead, a keyword search of your profile -- and your friends' profiles -- would be ideal in helping you find content from weeks, months, or years ago.

I like the news feed filter and "read later" options that you propose. What did we miss, readers? What are your wishes for FB in 2014? What is driving you crazy on FB right now?

2 things:

Android app only sorts in 'Top News' (i.e.; ADS) sequence.  This means REAL posts are NEVER seen.

Why can't we have a 'go-to' a specific time feature?   As in, 'go to posts starting at 2:00pm yesterday'?

I often start to look at posts, then have to go do something else, and of course, the app resets to the BEGINNING of the news feed, so I have to scroll through a bunch of stuff to get back to where I was.

The 'read later' option is also a great idea.

@tbeard554 -- A search-by-time feature is a good idea. Or at least something along the lines of "last read" that would take you back to where you left off the last time you logged on. Of course, it's probably unlikely that Facebook would add such a feature since it's focusing so much now on current content. But we can hope!

I love Facebook. I have used it since 2007 personally, and have built a social media agency around it (at first years ago...when it was the main of course it is just one of dozens of social networks that are utilized for business). 

Facebook is killing themselves with businesses of small and medium size: the very businesses they should have embraced for the long haul. Shrinking organic Reach with pay-per ads and Boosted Posts becoming the only means to survive for most. 

As an admin of over 140 Pages, and a top social agency in Connecticut, we talk to a LOT of businesses using social media. They are continually becoming upset with Facebook and moving away to other social networks. 

When they see organic Reach, something they have spent in some cases hundreds to many thousands of hours to create, and ad dollars in various increments wasted for "more more more" with diminishing returns...they are getting annoyed. Posts now that used to Reach 1000's are barely making three digits. Even with paying for them, even with spectacular well thought out content that has been successful for them...they are losing their audience...rather the audience is being stripped away...little by little. 

Everyone is fine with paying a little here and there. It is understandable. But to take fans AWAY by forcing a business to pay to re-engage them after years of work is a slap in the face.

Facebook better smarten up. They lost the youth, they will start losing businesses in droves, and soon their audience will be people not willing to pay ANYTHING to stay connected.

I think that Facebook is wary of adding a slew of configurable features and settings, a la what Microsoft has done for year. Facebook isn't shipping a product that requires paying for a license, so I think that influences these things some.

I'm not a big of fan of Facebook as a whole, I feel like it's just another necessary evil.

Kind of like Microooft.
