Facebook Unfriends In-App Mobile Messaging

Facebook is phasing out the in-app chat feature in its iOS and Android apps and wants users to download a separate app to chat with friends.

I haven't seen it yet, but I agree with both of you in that this appears to be an odd backward step, one that totally disregards its acquisition of WhatsApp and users' preferences. Like many, I quite like the existing messaging system, primarily because it is integrated so i can message people as we see each other online, usually at odd hours of the day or night! The mobile vs. desktop approach is strange, too, at a time when all other developers are aligning policies in a move to platform independence. Will be interesting to see how it plays out

@David, Agreed -- it feels like a step back. Regardless of how smoothly it switches from one app to another, managing two apps degrades user experience.

What's the advantage of a less integrated experience? If I want to check what's going on in Facebook from my phone, I want to be able to participate in either group or 1-1 messages, not switch between multiple apps.
