As social marketing becomes more prevalent, it makes sense that CIOs and CMOs align. After all, marketing tends to be the folks who drive overall company strategy and often CIOs feel disconnected from ensuring that their roadmaps support the key objectives.  As marketing relies more and more on cloud services and platforms to drive innovation, the CIO will no doubt be more involved in the decision making process on how to build and use these services for other strategic purposes.  Additionally, when you look at cost centres, it seems that marketing and IT are generally blamed for spending all the company money, so working together to drive more efficient internal and external services means that both these teams win.

Vala Afshar is an excellent spokesman on the benefits of mutual respect and goodwill, which isn't always the modus operendi in business environemtns. The CMO and CIO sometimes forget that they're working for the same company and substitute instead a competition for budget with each other.
