You know that guy in the back of the room, just waiting to list all the reasons your project won't fly? Don't fight him -- convert him.

I once was board member of a choir. A different board member was generally against everything. He was a pain in the rear...except for the times where he was right and saved our behinds. Those few cases were worth having him on the board.

Don't defuse Dr. No, but take the concerns in consideration. Just because someone is skeptical or against something does not mean they are clueless or just want to stall progress. They may actually have spend more time thinking about the issue than someone who just says yes to everything.

Agents of change are always questioned
If you want an ecosystem of NIMBY that thwarts innovation and financial prudence in implementation see your gov't in action. I have many colleagues that left private industry for the safety of gov't management roles and hear often how it's impossible to implement anything. Inertia. Dr No is quite alive and well in all levels of gov't.

Critical influence skill, yes, I agree. Dr. No will also often enlist allies during meetings to drop important vocabulary words that will scare the decision maker.

Know the motivations/fears of those people and stick to your own vocabulary that will make your point.

How have you dealt with the no people in your organizations, readers? Other tips?

Absolutely. If they are intertwined properly, one cannot grow without the other. And yet.....

--Maybe also, for whatever reason, the Dr. No doesn't fully understand all or parts of what is being suggested and says No out of fear of embarrassment.

Answering that question about what's in this for the Dr. No type goes a long way. Taking an objection, digging deeper and finding a silver lining for that individual is a critical influence skill. Unfortunately, it isn't easy. I've found that often Dr. No isn't even sure of why she doesn't support the change. Uncertainty is veiled in broad objections like "security." In a safe environment, probe deeper. Ask questions. Paraphrase answers back to make sure you are clear. Then, ask Dr. No to help identify possible and plausible solutions.
