EMC Refreshes VMAX, VNX, Isilon, And Data Domain Lines


Updates announced at EMC World target in-house storage.




EMC isn't letting the focus of its annual customer and partner event, EMC World, cloud its judgment about what enterprise customers really want: in-house storage. While there were a number of cloud-related announcements this week, there was lots of storage news, including the VMAX 10K, 20K, and 40K enterprise storage arrays; VNX unified storage enhancements; the combination of VPLEX virtual storage with RecoverPoint data protection; and new Data Domain and Avamar systems and software.

According to EMC president and COO Pat Gelsinger, who spoke with InformationWeek just prior to the event, cloud-based storage "hasn't replaced private storage by any means. Most of the volume is being driven by consumer services. Enterprise use is being driven by test and dev. People go, 'It's an easy way to experiment, but they don't really do anything serious there.'"

Highlights from the storage-related announcements included the following, which are available now:

VMAX 40K: Built on the Virtual Matrix Architecture introduced in 2009, the VMAX 40K features up to 32 2.8-GHz Intel Xeon 6-core processors, 2 TB mirrored (1 TB usable) and ECC-protected DDR3 DRAM. It also offers double the internal fabric bandwidth compared with the original VMAX.

Unisphere: The tool offers centralized monitoring and management capabilities for VMAX products.

Federated Tiered Storage: A no-cost feature that enables enterprises to integrate existing storage devices with VMAX equipment.

EMC has also combined its VPLEX virtual storage with its RecoverPoint data protection offering, for what it calls "the industry's first solution to combine active-active data centers with third-site disaster recovery protection." The combination offers customers VPLEX AccessAnywhere cache coherency technology and RecoverPoint's ProtectEverywhere for both EMC and non-EMC equipment. VPLEX can be managed directly from VMware vSphere.
