For Wireless LANs, New Convergence Possibilities

With fixed-mobile convergence a part of its roadmap for some years, wireless LAN provider Aruba -- the No. 2 provider of enterprise Wi-Fi systems behind Cisco -- is now trialing its FMC system running on Nokia E-series mobile devices. The company "is very focused on voice right now -- all forms of voice," says director of product marketing Peter Thornycroft. Early customers include enterprises with large premises that need wireless coverage, including hotels, hospitals, and universities. Now that workers can connect over Wi-Fi with their cellular phone, adds Thornycroft, "they can connect to the PBX, and it pretty much does what their deskphone is doing today."
