Overview: It’s become commonplace to hear business executives complain about the expense of becoming compliant with an increasing number of regulatory and legal requirements, from the Gramm-Leach Bliley Act and HIPAA to Sarbanes Oxley and new rules for e-discovery. These all demand that organizations are able to exercise discipline over their ever-growing volumes of data during its useful lifecycle. That’s a considerable challenge given that critical records and documents reside in multiple pockets throughout businesses, in both physical and digital forms.

Yet those expenses may seem minor compared to the costs businesses could bear if they fail to implement policies, processes and tools that will help them effectively govern information to be able to comply with regulations, policies and legal requests. Those costs can be measured in administrative overhead and added user burdens for classifying, archiving, retaining and searching through widely dispersed stores of physical and digital data; in business disruption as companies struggle to respond to demands for information as part of audits or lawsuits; and in dollars spent on burgeoning storage infrastructures.

Compliance costs, but non-compliance can cost a lot more. It's imperative that organizations properly manage information throughout its lifecycle to meet the growing number of regulatory and legal demands. A new survey from CMP Research shows that most businesses still have a way to go toward achieving this goal.
