Planning, Implementing, and Administering Scaleout Solutions With SQL Server 2005

Overview: There is an underlying tension during planning discussions regarding scaleout architectures. Often, scaling out with Microsoft SQL Server was a solution of last resort; a company turns to a scaleout solution when they’ve almost exhausted existing hardware. Scaleup is almost always easier to achieve than scaleout. But, in order to best implement a scaleout architecture, it must be planned in advance. This paper discusses retrofitting scaleout to an existing database application as well as planning a scaleout database application from scratch. The paper describes planning guidelines and administration tasks to consider when implementing a scaleout solution with SQL Server 2005.
