Overview: In 2002-2003 the apparently steady and victorious US corporate world was astounded to its foundations by the news of the collapse of two of its largest corporations. The telecoms company MCI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, just as the corporate world was adjusting to that shock, in the following December the energy company and seventh largest US corporate, Enron, was also affirmed bankrupt. The shock waves from these two events had a profound effect on corporate America and President Bush took personal responsibility for restoring the public and investor assurance in the stability of America’s biggest companies.
