Overview: Its easy to think that the only route into teaching in the Higher Education sector is to go straight from a bachelor’s degree to a masters and a PhD and then into world of work. While this career path is common and is frequently discussed in this paper published by jobs.ac.uk, it is certainly not the only way of becoming a lecturer. It is important not to dismiss the idea of making a career change later in life as many university departments are willing to hire someone who has had years of experience in other fields and only come to teaching later on.
