Overview: P&G’s R&D division consists of many individual laboratories, or groups of labs. There was no method of linking labs together to standardize processes or share information. P&G investigated a variety of methods to create a system to solve this problem, noting that Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN) represented an important part of the answer. Product lifecycle management (PLM) was one of the methods considered, even though no one was using PLM in the context that P&G had envisioned. The company overcame the scientists’ misgivings by working closely with Siemens PLM Software.
