Calculating and Prioritizing Your Data Center IT Efficiency Actions

Date: July 2009
Type: White Paper
Rating: (0)

Overview: The lack of a true data center efficiency metric is challenging to IT and data center managers as they try to justify much needed IT investments to management. To help quantify data center efficiency, Emerson Network Power introduces in this paper CUPS, or Compute Units per Second. Similar to miles-per-gallon metric in the automobile industry, CUPS is meant to represent the “performance” of the data center.

Using the Energy Logic analysis and the CUPS-based analysis, IT and data center managers can identify and prioritize data center efficiency improvement projects. Implementing the 10 Energy Logic strategies increases data center efficiency by 3.6 times, and incorporating three actions – faster replacement of IT technologies, virtualization and high density architecture – improves data center efficiency by 3.1 times.
