An Introduction to Network Processors

Source: Siemens
Date: January 2008
Type: White Paper
Rating: (0)

Overview: Nearly all devices on the network need to perform some form of packet processing. This includes Ethernet switches, ATM switches, IP routers, hardware firewalls, lawful interceptor devices, web servers, web switches, DSLAMs, bridges and base-stations. In the past, when data rates were comparatively slow and networking protocols were fairly simple, packet processing for networking devices was implemented in software running on general-purpose processors. Developing networking applications was fairly straightforward, with all the processing performed in software. However, increasing network data rates and the introduction of more sophisticated networking protocols have outstripped developments in bus and clock speeds of general-purpose processors.
