Overview: The last quarter century has seen enormous progress in the performance and capabilities of servers, desktop computers, laptops, and handheld devices. The exponential growth in data all around is also playing a key role. It is creating demand in mainstream computing for high-end applications, and this in turn can drive up the energy used by computing systems. Designing for energy-efficient performance is key to ensuring that new systems can support high-end applications without dramatically increasing energy consumption. This requires a fundamental rethinking on how to deliver new levels of performance within a given power envelope.
