Overview: This paper describes a hardware-assisted IEEE 1588 execution in the IXP46X product line of network processors. A summary of the 1588 standard is presented, and the general pros and cons of hardware- versus software-oriented 1588 implementations is discussed. Detailed description of both the 1588 hardware logic in IXP46X network processors, and the Intel XScale Core-based software-programming model, is provided. Examples of 1588 applications are also included.
