Overview: Network and systems management (NSM) solutions are part of the regular repertoire of enterprise IT operations staff that enables them to keep business critical applications and infrastructure up and running. While Big 4 NSM mega-suites (namely HP OpenView, IBM Tivoli, CA Unicenter and BMC Patrol) have dominated the high end of the market – they may not be the right choice for many mid to large size enterprise organizations. While mega-suite functionality can be powerful on paper, their capabilities are often an overkill and rarely used by most organizations.

This white paper discusses the drawbacks of NSM mega-suite ownership arising from legacy and proprietary architectures and acquisition led growth resulting in overlapping functionality, disparate user interfaces and high costs of deployment and manageability. The net effect is that the cumulative cost of ownership of an NSM mega-suite solution goes way beyond assessments at the beginning of the project.
