Overview: The Google data center in Oregon uses as much electricity as the entire city of Geneva, Switzerland, and the power and cooling requirements for the servers of the five largest search engines is about 5 GW or the same amount Las Vegas uses on the hottest day of the year. With numbers like these, Alcatel-Lucent’s Greg Kovich discusses the impact and importance of green IT outside the data center. Kovich discusses the savings that can be realized by implementing solutions such as energy management systems, smart meter reading, multimodal asset tracking, automated compliance, and smart appliance control. In addition, Kovich presents cost-saving measures such as the flexible workspace concept and increased use of telecommuting and remote workers, which create significant impact on the bottom line and the environment.
