Overview: IPv6 is a network layer Internet protocol (IP) standard used by electronic devices to exchange data across a packet-switched internetwork. The Internet is evolving rapidly towards the use of mobile devices that must be able to communicate with other mobile and stationary devices. The need for more Internet addresses for the many devices that will be Internet-enabled will, at some point in time, exceed the capability of IPv4. IPv6 can provide enough IP addresses that all nodes can have globally unique addresses for true peer-to-peer communication.
