Overview: Instant Messaging (IM) needs little introduction. IM is a well-known and widely used technology which allows people (or software) to exchange messages over a network in real time. Instant messaging services are regularly used by hundreds of millions of users worldwide. Companies such as AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo provide IM services based on proprietary messaging protocols.
