Overview: The IMS is an evolutionary step on the path towards a converged 3G services future. While IMS was defined initially with PLMN networks with IP based networks in mind, the IMS architecture can become the framework for a fully converged future that transcends all device types and access technologies. The IMS defines a sophisticated service control architecture that provides the consumer with a consistent user experience across many different devices. The IMS HSS may grow to become the linchpin of a centralized service and management database that unites the PSTN, PLMN, and IMS into a truly converged environment.
