Overview: This paper talks about Web Services and XML Security. It specifically discusses the issues that must be considered when designing a Web Service, providing XML support to existing applications. It explains why, although the XML specification provides for the security of XML messages, this should not be relied upon for organizations seeking to introduce a totally secure, XML-based application environment. The aim of this paper is not to discuss specific technologies rather it is to present an overview of some of the security factors involved in XML and Web Services and the measures that can be taken to mitigate them.
