Green Wireless Systems

Overview: Part of the greening of wireless design is making sure handsets are efficient, but the other portion lies in the wireless network itself: the power amplifier. Today’s power amplifiers are only about 15 percent efficient, due in large part to use of multicarrier systems. Passing RF signals from multiple carriers through each PA creates power peaks, and requires the PA to draw enough power to handle those peaks. Moving to new-generation, small base stations allows for increased energy efficiency. Combined with improvements in PA efficiency, scheduling and sleep protocols allow devices to decrease power usage between active uses, all of which can help decrease operator energy bill and lead to greener wireless communications.
