Source: Symantec
Date: January 2008
Type: White Paper

Overview: Security risks such as spyware and adware have the potential to enable the compromise of personal information, and privacy. These programs have a wide range of functionality and are increasing in prevalence globally. Some of the programs perform what can be perceived as overtly malicious activity, such as logging keystrokes and exporting sensitive data, such as bank account numbers, credit card details, and passwords/PINS, without consent. Yet other programs may perform activities that appear innocuous, such as keeping track of Web sites visited to deliver advertising content, with little impact other than consumption of system resources.
