Overview: With much gusto, firms routinely sell ""Privacy enhancing technology"" to enrich the web experience of typical consumers. Standards bodies have thrown in their hats, and even large organizations such as AT&T and IBM have gotten involved. Still, it seems no one has asked the question, ""Are people trying to save a sinking ship?"" ""Are the ultimate goals actually achievable given the current framework?"" This paper tries to examine the necessary infrastructure to support the goals of privacy enhancing technologies and the reasoning behind them.
