Overview: Retailers and CPG companies have yet to utilize outsourced expertise to support their category management initiatives in a mainstream manner. An outsourcing strategy for category and shelf management could enable more time and energy to increasing sales, improving margins and reducing inventory. Outsourcing could facilitate the long sought, but rarely attained ambition, customizing shelf space at each store to cater to the localized need of the customers. This paper examines the prospects for outsourced components of the planogramming process to achieve greater results than have historically been achieved.
