EMC NetWorker: EMC's Next Generation Backup and Recovery Strategy Comes into Focus

Overview: EMC NetWorker was once easily defined as a "backup application". That reality is now long gone as the company has transitioned NetWorker into a true platform residing in the middle of a range of data-centric operations for the management, monitoring, moving and protecting data. Specifically, we see that EMC has integrated NetWorker across a wide range of key high-profile offerings including Avamar, RecoverPoint, VMware, Centera, EMC Disk Library (EDL), Celerra, and Documentum as well as tighter integration with core applications such as TimeFinder, SnapView, SnapSure, and SRDF/S. Meanwhile, the NetWorker application itself has become more advanced with its Dashboard analytic option, providing a range of advanced cross-domain management and monitoring capabilities. It is clear from these moves that EMC is making NetWorker a cornerstone of their next generation backup strategy. In our opinion, this is broadly representative of where all major data protection platforms must move in the coming years in order to maintain competitive advantage in the data protection space. NetWorker is a prime example of the transformation now underway in data protection as backup applications evolve into the command and control platforms of recovery management. This is both a product platform and trend to watch closely in 2008.
