(0)Overview: Although the use of tape is changing from a main backup to a longer term archival model, the main reasons for using tape, low cost of ownership, portability and ease of maintenance remain. It does not make sense to leave most data on disk arrays on servers or storage devices for years and years. While low-cost disks and remote online backup becomes progressively more common, as a last line of defense there remains a need for data archives that are based on detachable media securely domed away.
