Overview: This paper published by Bell Microproducts illustrates the terms IDE (Intelligent Drive Electronics or Integrated Drive Electronics) and ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) have come to be interchangeable in the industry when referring to typical personal computer disk drive technology. The ATA standard was a move forward from the IBM AT (Advanced Technology) systems. The technology has moved from a few megabytes to hundreds of gigabytes over the past 2 decades.
