Overview: This white paper published by Norb Technologies examines the effects on data retrieval costs when databases become slow due to fragmentation. Microsoft’s SQL Server database running on a Windows 2003 Server platform was chosen to demonstrate the costs involved. Whilst fragmentation problems are not unique to SQL Server, it was chosen as it consistently produced the highest number of price/performance results when subjected to industry acknowledged Transaction Processing Council (TPC) tests.
