Adaptive EDCF: Enhanced Service Differentiation for IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks

Date: January 2008
Type: White Paper
Rating: (0)

Overview: IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN specification defines two different ways to configure a wireless network: ad-hoc and infrastructure mode. In infrastructure mode an Access Point (AP) is needed to connect wireless stations to a distribution system, whereas in ad-hoc mode all wireless stations are distributed without access coordinator. This paper, focuses on ad-hoc networks since distributed random access control are often preferred to centrally coordinated access control. Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) is the basic medium access mechanism of 802.11 for both ad-hoc and infrastructure modes. It uses CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) protocol.
