Overview: Keeping workers safe in potentially dangerous environments has always been a major concern. From the simplicity of the canary in the coalmines to the latest technologies, providing the best possible level of safety in risky work environments continues to be a top priority. Recently, there has been a considerable focus on Intrinsic safety, with the European Union’s ATEX regulations taking the lead for requiring essentially safe (I-Safe) devices in potentially volatile work areas. For the rest of the world, guidelines - like the National Electrical Code NEC-500 - are in place, but are not compulsory.
