Whitepaper: Enhancing Capacity Of A Satellite Broadband System Via Adaptive Coding And Modulation

by ViaSatJan 01, 2008

SurfBeam is a broadband satellite system developed by ViaSat Inc., based on the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). SurfBeam has been deployed internationally with tens of thousands of users. This paper published by ViaSat describes the implementation of an Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) scheme for SurfBeam that leads to enhanced system capacity for the downlink channel. The ACM scheme employed monitors each consumer’s downlink channel quality and dynamically changes the modulation/codepoint at which that user is sent his/her information.
