Overview: Prior to Sun Solaris 10, Red Hat® Enterprise Linux® and Solaris used very similar system startup methods. Solaris 10 introduced the Service Management Facility (SMF). This is a complete replacement for the type of rc-style system initialization that was previously common to both Solaris and Linux.
