Overview: Cloud technologies and services hold the promise of shorter time-to-market, cost-sharing with other users, and instant availability of resources. Harvard Research Group (HRG) believes that cloud computing enables organizations of all sizes and levels of maturity to simplify, consolidate, virtualize, and re-architect their computing infrastructure for the future. Linux, with hypervisor technologies such as Kernel-based virtual machine (KVM), and in conjunction with chip-based technologies, is certain to broaden the use of virtualization and the adoption of cloud computing.

Server virtualization and workload consolidation on the new generation of Linux on Intel architecture (IA) platforms requires fewer physical resources to support the same level of functionality, throughput, availability, performance, and security. This results in significant cost reduction related to migration, including a decrease in energy use, environmental conditioning, and physical space requirements. With capital budgets on the decline, and IT professionals forced to do more with less, the significant cost reduction and performance gains of migrating to Linux on x86 IA is a winning combination for many organizations.

This paper presents a breakdown of migration factors and common scenarios, as well as comments from healthcare, financial services, and telecommunications industry IT professionals who have chosen to migrate to Linux.
