Overview: This paper examines the recent efforts to privatize the Social Security system in the United States. The first section outlines the basic economics of the program and examines the extent to which it faces financial problems in coming decades. The second section briefly describes the political forces that have sought to promote privatization and/or cuts in the program. The third section recounts the recent battles over Social Security privatization and assesses the near term prospects for future battles. The fourth section highlights some of the key issues in the debate and notes some of the arguments that have been effective against privatization efforts.
