Strategy: Achieving Compliance in the Smart Grid

North American Electric Reliability Corp. Critical Infrastructure Protection compliance is undoubtedly one of the most comprehensive and rigorous sets of industry standards to meet. That’s a good thing, because there’s a lot on the line if the smart grid isn’t guarded with every conceivable degree of protection. While CIP is much too onerous a mandate for private business to comply with (generally speaking), we can pick and choose from many of its security practices in an effort to help protect environments outside of the energy space.

In this report, we examine what CIP standards mandate and take a look at the regulatory bodies that have oversight responsibility for auditing and enforcing CIP. We will also discuss how some of the unique security requirements of the energy sector can be leveraged more widely to secure enterprise environments.
