The bad news is that the business heard storage is cheap and sees no reason not to save every customer tweet along with CRM data, website click streams, and detailed financials, just in case a plan to analyze it all comes about.

The good news is that there are options for storing rarely used unstructured data in ways that leave it surprisingly accessible, without tying up costly primary systems. One method that's more than ready to move mainstream is object storage, having proved itself in cloud providers, primary research facilities and big time media companies.

Object systems essentially store metadata about objects separately from the data itself. The metadata contains a universal locator that can quickly retrieve data from less-costly storage, even if the file system structure has changed. Object stores are speedy, fault tolerant and best of all can cost effectively scale almost infinitely. (S7870414)
