IT Pro Ranking: Deduplication Products

Oct 12, 2011

Deduplication Products

We surveyed 440 business technology professionals for InformationWeek’s 2011 Deduplication Product Vendor Evaluation. The overall evaluation scores of vendor performance were in a tight range of 71% to 75%, with Dell/Compellent, NetApp and EMC/Avamar at the top of the list. Perhaps unsurprisingly (given their generally dominant storage market share), EMC/Data Domain and NetApp were the most used or evaluated deduplication vendors, with HP and Dell rounding out the top four.

When it comes to deduplication features, the three most important to our audience are replication, encryption and gateway functionality. Based on feature evaluations, three vendors were awarded the same high ranking: HP, IBM and NetApp.

Our results also show that only a third of our respondents use deduplication products. Another 23% are evaluating deduplication products. The majority, 43%, plan to evaluate these products over the next year. Organizations still on the sidelines about deduplication might take encouragement from the fact that of those using dedupe, 83% are satisfied or very satisfied with their products.

There's a great deal of debate among vendors over two competing architectures: in-line and post-process. In-line products dedupe incoming data before writing to disk, and post-process products do it after the backup is completed. Both approaches have their pros and cons, but a majority of our respondents don’t know which architecture they use or plan to use. While both approaches will cut down on data volumes, they’ll also both affect backup processes differently. We believe IT needs to get informed about dedupe architectures before investing in a product.

Note that while we opened our survey with 17 vendors, only seven had enough IT users or evaluators to qualify for full evaluation in this report. A vendor’s absence from the full evaluation is not a reflection of its performance or capabilities. (R2640411)
