Android is now a real rival for the iPhone, rather than a distant threat. Andy Rubin, who helms Google's mobile effort, deserves a lot of the credit. Under Rubin's watch, Android has become more than an operating system for mobile devices. Rubin has helped create a Linux-based open source platform that matters to consumers, and threatens both Apple and Microsoft.
