If nothing else, Shantanu Narayen deserves credit for weathering months of abuse directed at his company by Apple's CEO. Having cozied up to Google, Narayen has secured a lifeline for Flash through Android. But it remains to be seen whether cross-platform development can survive in an era when the only defense against Google-driven commodity pricing is erecting barriers to competition.

But progress could still stall: 59 percent of nonusers ­distrust the security of Google's cloud. Its data privacy is an open question, and 37 percent worry about integration.
