A look at emerging technology that's disruptive--and that isn't.

Xeroxhas taken the concept behind dual-core processors and applied it to printers. The company last week demonstrated a "dual-engine" printer that will form the basis for its future product designs. Rather than using a single print engine--the component that translates electronic impulses into marks on paper--the new machine relies on two engines that work together. The result is a printer that turns out 144 double-sided pages per minute.

Futurephone is offering long-distance phone calls to more than 50 countries for the price of a call to--this isn't a joke--Iowa. U.S. users of the service call a number in the Hawkeye State, after which Futurephone routes the call via VoIP to another company-run "gateway" exchange in the country callers want to reach. Futurephone plans to eventually support itself by making callers listen to short ads.
