3Com, Novell Unveil Licensing Deal

3Com Corp. today unveiled a licensing agreement with Novell for use of Novell Directory Services eDirectory, which will be interoperable with 3Com's policy-management system. The agreement will make NDS available across the broadest range of equipment platforms, Novell spokesman Jonathan Cohen says. "Policy management is an important area for NDS, which is uniquely able to store policy information in directory format."

Both companies say their focus will be on user-based and network-access policies, which will help IT managers drive user-centric business policies in their networks.

Planned for release in mid-2000, 3Com's policy-management system, running on Windows NT and Sun Solaris systems, will authenticate users before they are allowed access to their corporate network. It will also examine each user profile stored in the directory and allow access to network resources based on predefined policies.

3Com says the deal will help customers who depend on NDS for their mission-critical applications.
